Which CDL endorsements do you actually need?
Every CDL applicant takes the General Knowledge exam. After that, the endorsements you need are determined by the kind of driving you plan to do. A flatbed driver hauling steel for a regional carrier will probably need the Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles tests but not Hazmat or Passenger. A city transit driver needs Passenger, and an over-the-road tanker driver hauling fuel needs Tank Vehicle plus Hazardous Materials (the X endorsement combines both).
You can take more than one endorsement at a time. In fact, many drivers take General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles all in one DMV visit so they can drive any Class A combination once they pass the road test. Adding Hazmat later requires a separate visit because of the TSA background check, which can take 30 to 60 days to clear.
The questions on this site are not random. We mapped them to the chapter and section of the official AAMVA CDL Manual that governs each topic, so when you miss a question on, say, the proper procedure for inspecting a tank manhole cover, the explanation tells you exactly which manual section to review.
